THE FLAG

Each colour has a specific meaning:

Green stands for the Muslim faith, but also for hope and fertility.

Yellow for wealth, the arts and literature.

Red for the struggle for independence and the spilled blood.

The green star in the yellow stripe again stands for hope and the 5 points of the star for the country’s open-mindedness towards the 5 continents.

THE EMBLEM

The official emblem features a lion and a baobab

The motto of the state is: Un peuple, un but, une foi”

This means one people, one purpose and one faith and is meant to illustrate the cohesion of the nation.

ETHNIC DIVERSITY

Different people of different cultures live together in Senegal.

In total, there are about 20 different ethnic groups. Gradually, people marry people from other groups. This mixes the groups and allows them to live together more peacefully.

Most people in Senegal are Wolof, followed by the Fulani (or Peulh) and Toucouleur. Other ethnic groups in Senegal are the Serere, Diola and Mandika.

SENEGALESE CUISINE

Millet, maize and rice are the staple foods in Senegal. Couscous is also popular. Fish is often served with it. Meat is mainly chicken, beef and lamb. Beans and tomatoes are used just as often in Senegalese cuisine as peanuts. There are also biscuits with peanuts.

The national dish in Senegal is Thieboudienne, or Ceebu Jen in Wolof: ceebu means “rice with” and “jen” means fish. This is rice with fish, accompanied by various vegetables. If you cook it with meat instead of fish, it is called Ceebu Yapp.
